A Postcard from Scotland
Lady B taps her fan with impatience. “Where is Miss Dare? According to my schedule, she is expected today.”
Albert squawks, something that sounds like, “ARGH!’
Lady B: “Argh, indeed! How could she have forgotten us? I am most put out.”
Just then, the butler enters with a message of sorts, presented on a gilt salver.
Lady B, peering at it: ”Why, it’s a charming, amazingly lifelike watercolor miniature of a landscape. Who could have sent this?”
Albert, feathers ruffling: “ARRRRRGH!”
Lady B: ”Albert, really. I know you share my frustration with Miss Dare, but I cannot think with your carrying on so.”
Monty, strolling in: “Och, my dear Aunt Tropey, I think the bird’s trying to remind you Miss Dare is in Scotland today.”
Lady B: ”Scotland! Why on earth would Miss Dare go there? The only reason for a lady to hie away to Scotland in such a rush is to elope. And though I refer to her as Miss Dare to satisfy my own peculiar aesthetic wishes, I know she already has a husband.”
Monty: ”Why don’t you read the postcard?”
Lady B, squinting at it: ”Postcard? What’s a postcard?”
Monty flips the miniature landscape over.

Dear Lady B, Warmest greetings from Scotland! Having a lovely day in Aberdeenshire. Wish you and Albert were here to enjoy this view. Yours, etc., Miss Dare
Lady B: That can’t be Scotland. Everyone knows that Scotland is misty, rainy, dreary, and cold. And overrun with sheep, which–upon reflection–is likely the reason Miss Dare was drawn there. She is so fond of the things.
Monty: I’m more interested in figuring out how she managed to soar so high above the ground. Do you imagine she’s got herself a bird now, too?
Hmm…Just where in Scotland IS Tessa Dare?
Hello, all! Tessa here, checking in from currently sunny and gorgeous Scotland!
Today, I was inspired by Daily Beast blogger Andrew Sullivan, who regularly runs a View From My Window contest. People send in a photo taken from a window pretty much anywhere in the world, he posts it with no context whatsoever, and then other people try to guess where it was taken. I’m always amazed at how many people are able to use Google Earth and tiny context clues to figure it out.
I took the above absolutely gorgeous photo from a window today, and I thought I’d see if any of you can guess which window it was.
To make it easier, here are some clues: This photo was taken from a turret window, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I got to the site by bus, and it belongs to the National Trust of Scotland.
If you’re the first to identify it correctly, I’ll bring you a little something special home from my trip!
I couldn’t help thinking this would be a pretty sweet view to wake up to daily. If you could choose, what view would be outside your bedroom window? Mountains? The beach? A beautiful garden?
I’ll be traveling today, so if I’m not able to check in too often, I apologize in advance. I’m sure I’ll have loads more photos and fun tales to share in the months to come!

Hi Tessa, hope you’re having a great time! Enjoy!
Is it Crathes Castle?!

Oh, almost forgot – I’d love to awaken each day to my favorite view and sound – the ocean!

I can’t say for sure where that is, sorry. ::blushes:: I am with Amy with the view of the ocean. I love the views Mom and I get when we spend our days at a hotel on the Jersey Shore.
The funniest view from my room had to be my last trip to Philly with my friends a few weeks back. I opened the hotel window to expect a view of the city skyline and what did I get? A loading dock! LOL!!! I HAD to take a picture.
Hopefully pic came out – had to share.

Jamie, this looks like the Convention Center. Were you staying at the Marriott?
Oct 8, 2012

Hampton inn – which is near the Marriott . Yes, that is the convention center loading dock.

Hope the windows were thick enough to keep that annoying back up beeping sound out of your room. What a view! LOL!
One of the worst views I ever had was at the beach (yes, can you believe it?) – we had a side room and they were putting up another part of the complex right next door. If I sat on the balcony, I could see the ocean – along with guys working on the same level across the way. These were not your hard bodied construction workers, shirts off in the summer heat, tanned sweaty bodies – these were plumbers. You know plumbers – heavy tool belts, loose jeans – you get the picture. *wink*

12:14 pm
Lol Jamie! I’ve been there before!

12:33 pm
Oh my gosh. That’s almost as good as the time we had a view of the employee smoking area. LOL.

12:59 pm
Ha, Jamie! Reminds me of a friend who makes a point of searching out the most hideous postcards to send – you know, the kind that make you go “why did anyone think it was a good idea to print this?”

Definitely Crathes Castle, I’ve been there and I remember those wonderfully bobbly manicured bushes
. Hope you are having fun

Right you are! Bobbly bushes (love that description!) are pictured in my comment below.
And yes, I’m having a great time!

Hi Tessa, I think it’s Crathes Castle too. Such a beautiful place, I hope you enjoy your trip. Scotland is my favorite place to visit. Hope you enjoy a wee dram of the Scots’ national treasure. Cheers!!

Thank you, Janice! I really should try a wee dram one of these days… I usually don’t drink when I’m traveling alone, but it seems a shame not to taste a tiny bit!

What a lovely picture Tessa! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Hope you have a lovely time and can’t wait to hear more about it when you get back.
As to the perfect view to wake up to every day, I think it’d have to be this picture from Tuscany. Not bad right?
Oct 8, 2012
12:15 pm
Yep, would love to be there right now!
Oct 8, 2012
12:34 pm
Le sigh! I love Tuscany. I was only there once, when I was 19 years old, but it’s still one of my “happy places” in those moments when you want to close your eyes and calm down. A rustic farmhouse, open windows, fluttering white curtains, rolling hills of olive groves outside… si.

Gorgeous. Lovely Tuscany. Actually I love Italy (see my comment & photo below)

I could happily wake to that view, Lisa! During one of my trips to Florence, I stayed in a hotel that served a rooftop breakfast. I was up there every morning!

Hullo from Edinburgh!
Evidently, I should have left off my clues or made the picture a harder one… you are all right, it’s Crathes Castle! So lovely, and such a lovely day to be there.
I’ve made it to Edinburgh now, and though I’ve only been here about 5 hours, I’m pretty sure I wish I could move here for a year or two. It’s so beautiful, and so beautifully Georgian (large swathes of it, anyhow). Today, I visited the (appropriately named) Georgian House, which is set up like a completely working high-class household from right around 1800. I saw and learned more there about daily life of the period than I did anywhere I’ve visited in London, Brighton, etc. The guides were fantastic and friendly. I got to try writing with pen and quill – not easy, for the left-handed.
Here’s the gorgeous drawing room:

Also… I watched Downton Abbey last night. Don’t hate me too much! No spoilers.
Except to say that even just based on this one episode, I think I like season 3 more than season 2.

Lovely pictures, Tessa. Sounds like you’re having a marvelous time. Glad to hear Downton Abbey is promising – I was disappointed in Season 2.
Here’s the actual view from my bedroom window. Pretty gorgeous though not always with rainbow. This photo is a few years old.
And here’s a place I’d always be happy to wake up to.

Miranda, what a gorgeous view you have! How beautiful.
Yes, DA season 2 got a little too crazy for my tastes – season 3 (again just my impression from one episode) seems to be more back to the basics of interpersonal relationships, upstairs/downstairs issues, and zingy dialogue. Maggie Smith is still getting all the best lines. As she should!

Her one liners about the Irish castle in that episode are truly hilarious! Love Maggie, I’m worried they are going to have to kill her off soon though! She must be getting on a bit!

Oh, Miranda! How gorgeous!

Love the beautiful photos, Tessa! So glad you’re enjoying your stay in Scotland. You must try a dram of single malt whiskey. Islay is very good.

Oh what a gorgeous photo! i am deeply jealous of your trip to Scotland — one day, I’ll have to see it for myself!
If I could have any view to wake up to, it would be a garden leading down to a lake. Nothing but pastoral country side for me…

Scotland is such a lovely country. I haven’t been in years, but so want to go back again.

Oh, I’m easy to please. As long as there’s coffee, I’m happy.
Hope you’re having a wonderful trip, Tessa! Those pix remind me of the Pixar version of Scotland in “Brave.” Bright and shiny!
Have a safe trip back ~

Chinese dry-cured hams have been recorded in texts since before the Song dynasty and used in myriad dishes. Several types exist in Qing dynasty cuisine and are used in dishes of stewing hams.
