In which Sabrina Darby annoys Lady B…again
“I’ve heard a rumor, Miss Darby.”
I crack one of my eyes open. Apparently I fell asleep on the sofa in Lady B’s library. I go to check the time and then remember that I’m back in the Regency and my cell phone has no power here. That’s the problem with spending a little too much time in 2013; one tends to forget some important details.
“Sit up, Miss Darby!” Lady B folds her arms over her chest and taps her toe. Loudly. And then I feel a pecking at my hair. Albert!
Naturally her minion would be close at hand. I sit up begrudgingly. As uncomfortable as these Regency sofas are, I was rather enjoying my rest.
“What rumor, Lady B?” I ask and seeing that she now has my attention, she finally sits down in the big brown leather chair across from me.
“A rumor that you have released a new book.”
Ohhh. That.
“I assured Albert that it could not possibly be true as I have not yet received a copy and all of your fellow authoresses have always been intelligent enough to send me a copy in advance of the public. However, Miss MacLean (who did present me with a copy of the fabulous One Good Earl Deserves a Lover) mentioned that you wrote yet again about mistresses. So what do you have to say for yourself?”
She is definitely in a huff.
“With apologies, Lady B, I confess the rumor is true.”
<< Squawk! >> Now you did it! << Squawk! >>
“But,” I continue quickly, “it is so different from my usual fare, and I’ve been a bit preoccupied this last week that—”
“Enough with the excuses, Miss Darby.”
“I am sorry, Lady B. Completely remiss of me. May I present you with a very special copy entirely for you? And one for Albert as well?”
Daniel Hartmann and Emily Anderson have every reason to hate each other. Her father destroyed the lives of his parents and he in turn sent her father to jail. Now Daniel’s a successful billionaire and artsy Emily is his newest employee. Both of them intend to make the other pay for the sins of the past, but revenge has never been so sweet.
Lady B nods with a sniff. And then opens the book.
And then starts to read. Aloud.
“Emily Anderson, right?”
So he knew my name. Despite the relative ubiquity of Anderson as a last name, surely then, he knew that I was the daughter of his father’s old partner.
I straightened. Turned. Sent him that slanted smile. Up close he was nearly devastating. But he wasn’t smiling back. Maybe that intense expression meant something other than the desire I had read. Maybe I only knew how to read college boys, not mega-wealthy businessmen.
“That’s right,” I said lightly. Took a sip of water while
watching him. “Newest employee at Hartmann Enterprises . . . Mr. Hartmann.”
His lips quirked. I almost held my breath, expecting that brief movement to stretch into his patented smirk, the one that had stared out at me from GQ. For goodness’ sake, he was a celebrity, or at least dated celebrities. And I was talking to him.
“Well, newest employee. I’m on my way out to lunch. Join me.”
I blinked.
He shifted. I could see the outline of muscles under the smooth lines of his pants. I had the brief, clear idea that his body would be long and lean, the sort of body that belonged to a man who was active and athletic but had never tried to bulk up. He was about a decade older than me and yet he was without doubt the most attractive man I’d ever been within five feet of.
He knew my name and he was asking me to lunch. If that didn’t add up to having been made, I didn’t know what did. I wanted to run but I had to brazen this out.
I crossed my arms, affected an air of nonchalance that I didn’t feel at all.
“Do you invite all your newest employees out to lunch?”
“Do you look at all your bosses that way?”
The way I had looked at him? What about the way he had looked at me?
“You’re my first boss,” I bit back quickly, hoping the heat I felt didn’t show in my cheeks. How exactly had I looked at him?
“We hired you without a track record?”
I wanted to stamp my feet at how easily he caught me off guard, twisted my words to serve him. Instead, I arched an eyebrow. Tilted my head. “Should I be worried for my job?”
He smirked. I sucked in a breath. The man was wickedly handsome. It wasn’t fair. Especially since I resented him. Hated him. He’d sent my father to jail.
There . . . attraction almost all gone.
“No. I don’t invite all my employees to lunch. But I’m inviting you.”
Almost.
Lady B looks up. “While I am not entirely certain about the language in this novel, I do hope you intend to bring this Daniel Hartmann to visit. You know how I always enjoy when these rogues attend one of my balls.”
“I will definitely see what I can do.”
However, in the meantime, I’m giving away a digital copy of Entry-Level Mistress to one of our commentors. I know we all adore Regency rakes, but what about contemporary heroes? Who are your favorites of years past?

Well, I’ve long been a lover of Regency Rakes and their romance stories, so reading about contemporary rakes is new for me. I’m at “entry level” on that.
Consequently, whenever I have the chance to try a new contemporary author and the description of the story (romance of course) is about a modern-day rake–I take it! Just like now. Thanks for this opportunity, Sabrina.

Until about 12 years ago, I thought the romance genre= historical romance + Danielle Steel. I didn’t even start reading contemporaries (other than time travel stories) until five years ago!

Hi Sabrina, poor Lady B – baffled by yet another strange thing from the future. The new book sounds very intriguing and I love the title. Going on my TBR list.
I’ve only recently returned to reading contemporary romances because for years they were so cookie cutter that they bored me to tears. Things have changed. They are bolder, more imaginative, and the heroes – omg! The heroes are incredibly swoon-worthy. I’ve got quite a few who I wouldn’t mind tucking away in a locked room for funtime – Shane Gallagher from COLLIDE by Juliana Stone, Jean Marc Gaspard from ACADIAN WALTZ by Alexandrea Weis, Cole Logan from TEXAS WIDE OPEN by KC Klein, James Harley from SOMEBODY LIKE YOU by Candis Terry, and anyone of Joan Swan’s gorgeous hunks! Just to name a few – I could be here a while if I keep going. Once not a fan of contemporaries but I am now and am actually working on one of my own. Yes, I am – believe it or not. : )

That’s how it starts, Amy. They are insidious!

So true! Congrats and thanks for feeding my new obsession. ; )

I do love Regency & Victorian Rakes & Rogues. I hardly, if ever read contemporary novels. I think the only ones I have read in the last few years are JR Ward’s Brotherhood series. The vampires are living in modern times, but are most likely still Regency age rogues. Vishous & Z are two of my favorite brothers.
I must admit that this Entry Level Mistress does look interesting. It may be a look see & definitely tell my Mom about. She loves contemporaries & doesn’t like historicals. Would save us money if she & I liked the same genre of novels.

Luckily my mother, sister and I all LOVE historicals. It made sharing books very easy.

I love a good contemporary romance! Lauren’s Eloise and Colin are a great read (particularly as I write my History Thesis…. talk about relating)! I also love all of Meg Cabot’s books – The Boy series in particular. Also anything by Jill Mansell!

Oh nice! And good luck with the thesis!

Congrats on your new release Sabrina!
Some of my favorite contemporary heroes? Any of the heroes in Julie James’s FBI/US Attorneys series. Jack, Nick, and Kyle all have a special place in my heart. I also love the heroes in Lisa Kleypas’s Travis trilogy-I once told Lisa, if all men in Texas were like Gage, Jack, and Hardy, I’d move to TX in a heartbeat! lol. And of course, it goes without saying that Nora writes some incredible heroes too, but I especially love Adam, Ben, and Nate from Montana Sky. Who doesn’t like sexy cowboys?

Thanks, Lisa.
I haven’t read Julie James but I should. I really am into romantic suspense lately, so that sounds right up my alley.

A couple of my recent favorite contemporary heroes are Kyle Rhodes from Julie James’s About That Night and Xander Whitfield from J.T. Ellison’s A Deeper Darkness and Edge of Black. Great excerpt. Thanks, Sabrina.

The book sounds totally yummy, Sabrina. Rakes are good from whatever period. I have a partiality for Louisa Edwards’s hot chefs – feed my foodie tastes as well as my rakish ones. I also adore Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s football heroes, even though I have no interest in football at all!

Oh SEP, yes! She was the first contemp author I read. And the first books I read on my kindle. I think I downloaded and read 8 of her books in a week.
Feb 21, 2013
8:03 pm
Me too! I totally glommed SEP. It was in pre-ebook days but luckily the books were in print and I came back from Borders with a gigantic (and expensive) bagful.

I just read a book with a hero named Horse (guess why he got that name?!?)
He’s an Afgan Vet who’s part of a motorcycle club (he’s actually their accountant!) and the book’s name is Reaper’s Property by Joanna Wylde.
Uff da!

I’m buried in a foot if snow in the Midwest, sorry I’m late! Congrats Sabrina! And your cover rocks! Love it
My favorite contemporary hero is Shawn Gallagher from Nora Roberts “Tears of the Moon”. I wouldn’t consider him a rake though.
Feb 21, 2013
10:56 pm
I knew you’d have a Nora Roberts hero, lol. I am surprised you didn’t say that guy from “The Witness”.
(You are right, that cover is hot — love the skyline too!)
Feb 21, 2013
11:05 pm
He was pretty awesome too, but Shawn was dreamy sexy
Did you finally get to “The Witness” ?

Haha. I love that you got Lady B to read aloud!
This book sounds great, and the cover is amazing. Congratulations, and good for you!
Victoria Dahl writes some awesome contemporary heroes. I love her books.

I really wanted to embed the audio file of Lady B reading but apparently the technology didn’t transfer across the time/space continuum very well.

I honestly rarely read contemporaries…but I would say my fav would be Hardy Cates from Lisa Kleypas’ Blue Eyed Devil. Which, I feel like I am cheating on my real love, Jerricho Barrons…but that’s a whole other genre.
I look forward to your new book Sabrina, I put it on my to-read last week!
Feb 22, 2013
12:41 am
I had to google Jerricho. And yep, that *is* a whole other genre! I’ve only barely scratched the surface there.
Feb 22, 2013
1:51 pm
Yes, it’s a wide surface too.
You must find a way to introduce Daniel to Lady B, LOL. He’d have a very interesting time of it I think.
Feb 22, 2013
3:08 am
I never read contemporary; I’m a die hard historical romance & fantasy romance reader!
Feb 22, 2013
7:34 am
Congratulations Sabrina! Your story looks like it will have a lot of “yummy” angst between the characters. Love the revenge factor! Good luck with your release. I have to say that my favorite contemporary hero is Neville Chamberlain from Ruthie Knox’s About Last Night. He’s the strong silent type. Love that book!
Feb 22, 2013

That is waiting on my Kindle now…and I’ve been dying to get to it, but I promised myself I would finish two others first…

That snippet from Entry-Level Mistress already has me hooked! I’ve been going back & forth b/t Regency & Contemporary lately. For contemporary heroes, though, first favorites to come to mind are Devlin Fitzwilliam in Tongue in Chic, J. Z. Barrons in the Fever series [does paranormal in alternate contemporary reality count?], & Jasha Wilder in Scent of Darkness. Michael Taggart in Sweet Liar is always a nostalgic favorite. That book was the first hardcover romance I ever owned & I loved every bit of it.
