I am standing amid a pile of books. This is not an abnormal occurrence for an authoress, but never have I been so befuddled by them. Do I go with the Austen or the Bronte? The Dickens or the Twain? The MacLean RITA-winning book, or the Dare RITA-winning book… or the Willig RITA-winning book? (Just kidding, I’ve read all three of those.)
But as I stand there, sorting through my befuddlement, Lady B comes barging through the door.
“Miss Noble, what are you doing?” This is such a common address from Lady B that I barely notice the indignation in her voice anymore.
“I’m trying to choose,” I murmur, my eyes coveting the spine of the latest bestselling mystery novel.
“Choose?” Lady B asks, gingerly stepping over the haphazard piles. “Choose what? You’ve already chosen a young friend of Monty’s to make your pet project, why don’t you go make a mess of him, instead of my library?”
“I’ll clean it up,” I promise.
“Like you promised to clean up your bed chamber after you turned in your latest novel? There is still a canal and gondola in there, and that’s from two books ago!” Lady B harrumphs. “And now it’s been joined by something that looks like a diorama of a bathing retreat! What is it with you and water?” She shakes her head.
“Yes, but this mess I will clean up. I just need to choose which books I want to read. Now that I’ve turned in my latest manuscript, I finally have the time to read again!” I grin with impish delight. Reading for pleasure is a rarity for me these days, and I am determined to take the next few weeks and burrow my way through a stack of novels. Just a book, a chaise, and lemonade in the summer sun. It will be heavenly.
“Well why did you not say so?” Lady B’s face lights up. “I know just the tome for you!”
She claps her hands, and nimbly picks her way over to the shelves. She lets her fingers dance over the spines, until she finds…
“Aha! Here we are!”
She hands the book to me.
“Miss Crenshaw’s Writings on Household Cleanliness and Decorum?”
“I am sure you – and your bed chamber, and this library – will find it extremely beneficial.” Lady B smiles as she sweeps her way out the door.
I suppose I should clean my room before I dig in to my (long delayed) summer reading. But perhaps you all can help me. What are you reading these days that’s great?
