I have a penchant for giving characters off-beat pets. Along with some of the more standard animal companions, such as horses and dogs, I’ve…er…blessed my poor characters with nanny goats, orphaned lambs, attack geese, talking parrots (Tartuffe sends his regards to Albert!), thieving rats, and extinct dinosaurs. To name a few.
Izzy, the heroine of my next book, has what just might be the weirdest pet I’ve written yet.
(I’ll just leave that teaser here and come back to it in a few months. )
Oddly enough, I think the one pet I haven’t given any of my characters (so far) is a cat! How is that possible? What an oversight. Kittens are the cutest things possible.
I don’t know what it is, but I seem to gravitate toward the more so-homely-they’re-cute kinds of pets.
Just this week, I saw this video posted somewhere. And now, if I can’t find a way to give a romance character a pet porcupine someday, I just don’t know what I’ll do. Did you know they make sounds!? They make the cutest sounds!! While eating little slices of banana! It’s…it’s… everything.
(sorry this video has an ad, but it’s the kind you can skip after 3 seconds)
The belly poke at about 2:30 is the cutest thing ever.
Which animals do you find oddly adorable? Any unlikely (or likely) pets in your household? Feel free to post pictures!
And what animal do you think would be the biggest challenge to work into a historical romance?
