Salutations, my darlings! I return to you from the wild and wooly north, where things like “poutine” are on evening’s the menu, and people seem to spend a lot of time rooting for Vikings. A magical place, where the saga of the Mighty Ducks originally took place. Yes, I am speaking of Minneapolis! And the Jane Austen Society of North America Annual General meeting, which took place there last weekend.
I attended said meeting (which is their term for their annual convention) and engaged in delightful repartee and witty banter with those members of JASNA who had been good enough to invite us. I also was immersed into the world and time of Jane Austen, as evidenced by this photo of and ACTUAL FREAKIN’ BALL. (please note: my photography was done on my phone and is deeply lame.)
And while I thoroughly enjoyed the panels and discussions and meals and people, the most awesome thing there? Besides the University of Iowa football team that was staying in our hotel? Candice Hern.
Candice Hern (friend of the Ballroom) is an avid collector of regency… stuff. And she was kind enough to bring her collection along with her, and show it off for everyone.
There were gowns:
As well as Candice’s fashion plate collection:

As well as all manner of reticules, slot purses, snuff boxes and quizzing glasses. But my favorite thing out her her collection was this:
This little portable writing set was the fountain pen before the fountain pen. I’m forming whole stories in my head about who this belonged to, what they wrote and who they wrote to. Perhaps I see an epistolary novel in my future?
What’s the your favorite ‘thing’ from the Regency era? The clothes? The hair ornaments or bonnets? The reticules or quizzing glasses?
